I thought about joining a few times over the last few years, but was always too busy or afraid. I'm socially awkward and a perfectionist. So when I don't get something right the first time I beat myself up over it. I joined roller derby because I was tired of being afraid, and it's been one of the best decisions I've ever made.
I love the community and how empowering it is. No one expects you to be perfect right out of the box, they expect you to try and to push yourself a little more each time. This is not an easy sport to play. It will hurt and you will fall (a lot), but every effort is so worth it. It is an incredible feeling knowing that your team is there to celebrate each small success right along with you.
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me." Frank Herbert, Dune
